There is power in design. A great design is the engine of life. Great leaders understand the power of designing their life and business. In fact, former IBM CEO Thomas Watson once said, “Good design is good business.” Good design is not only good business, it is great leadership.
The question that every successful leader must evaluate is, “How well are you designing your life?”
Author and speaker Valorie Burton describes a life of design in this way. “You were uniquely designed for success in your purpose. When you align your life with your strengths – those innate qualities you were gifted with – you will tap into a level of grace that empowers you to achieve things you could never accomplish in your strength alone.”
How to Become a Design CEO:
D – Decide on your most Important Action to take that Day.
Design is about making the right decisions at the right time in order to bring about the right results. The key to great living is to make the right decisions daily. To live by design, leaders’ must decide each day what the most important action they must take that day.
Coaching Question: How will you determine what are your most important actions?
E – Engage in the Wisdom of Others.
Great leaders learn what others have already learned. They learn it from listening, while others have to learn it through mistakes, setbacks, failures, or experience. You can accelerate your success when you don’t have to go through the mistakes of life to learn key leadership lessons. If you make a mistake, don’t waste it. Learn from it. But what if you could go through the bulk of your life and learn from others so that you could avoid the mistakes that slow down success?
Coaching Question: What have you learned from someone else that they had to learn the hard way?
S – Serve others by Lifting the People around you to a Higher Level.
Success in life is not so much about what we accomplish, but rather it is about how we help others to succeed. I was once asked about my best and biggest accomplishments. I knew that I was on right track when in response I did not think about my own accomplishments, but rather about the accomplishments that I had helped others to achieve. A life by design is about serving others. It is about helping others to accomplish their dreams and desires.
Coaching Question: Who are you helping?
I – Invest in Experiences that Expand your Life and your Leadership.
The life of the leader will be defined by moments and experiences that shape their thinking, give memories to celebrate, and challenge them to expand their vision. I believe that every leader should have at least eight great experiences. Each year I have leaders’ and CEOs’ identify the biggest three experiences that they want to strategic plan for during that year. Every leader should invest in experiences that expand their life and their leadership.
Coaching Question: What are your eight great leadership experiences?
G – Grow in areas of Strengths, Passions, and Purpose.
A life of design is a life of growth. Every leader should be intentional about designing a life of growth in the areas of their strengths, passions, and passions. Author Marcus Buckingham reminds us that, “You’ll grow most strong where you’re already strong.” Leaders’ should know their weaknesses, but they must grow their strengths. Successful leaders know their passions and purpose and they never stop growing in those areas.
Coaching Question: How you be intentional about growing in your strengths?
N – Name specific Goals and Accomplishments that must be Achieved.
The famous Zig Ziglar would often remind his audiences that they would never hot a goal that they did not set. He was right. Goals setting and goal achieving are essential components of a life by design. Write a list of yearly goals and lifetime goals in the key areas of your life. These areas could consist of work, relationships, personal achievement, spiritual, and education. Every successful leader that I know has a goals list.
Coaching Question: Have you written a list of goals that you will accomplish in your lifetime?
A life by design is not easy. It is easy to get sidetracked by the emergencies and issues of others. Smart leaders’ and CEOs’ design their life and leadership and they don’t let others design their life for them. Remember the words of Valorie Burton when she said, “You were uniquely designed for success in your purpose. When you align your life with your strengths – those innate qualities you were gifted with – you will tap into a level of grace that empowers you to achieve things you could never accomplish in your strength alone.”
When you live a life by design you will achieve breakthroughs, accomplish great achievements, and accelerate your significance to every person that you meet.
